One of the models was Benno Premsela. He was already very ill when I asked him. Benno was a child of the Bauhaus generation. That’s why I chose the primary colours red, yellow and blue. The green tulip is a reference to the conflict between Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg about primary colours, in order to indicate that Benno was not dogmatic. When I showed him the result, he said: ‘Anthon, you have done something very important for a sick man, you made him immortal.’
