On the postage stamp Spreek je moerstaal (Speak Your Mother Tongue) – in classic cross stitch – the text is embroidered: ‘Speak Your… Mother Tongue.’ The last word is repeated below in the dialects of Twente and Limburg and in the Friesian language. I thought that ‘Speak Your Mother Tongue’ was an obvious expression because of the importance and the unique nature of the regional dialects. I chose embroidery because embroidery is something intrinsically close to home, as close to home as regional dialects. Many people speak regional dialects at home.
